Wageningen University, part of Wageningen University & Research, is the only university in the Netherlands that specifically focuses on the theme ‘healthy food and living environment’. Their research and education are based on a fundamental scientific approach and accordingly strongly geared toward application in practice. This is achieved through the close collaboration between different fields of expertise including both natural and social sciences.

Wageningen University & Research is a collaboration between Wageningen University and the Wageningen Research foundation (both NEM-EMERGE partners). Their mission is ‘To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’, and their strength lies in its ability to join the forces of specialised research institutes and the university.

Areas of expertise bringing to the project: world-class specialists within the fields of nematology, plant resistance proteins, genomics; phytosanitary service laboratories

Role in NEM-EMERGE:

  • WU is also contributing to WP2, WP4, WP6
  • Project coordinator
  • Leader of WP5 (Nematode control based on native soil suppressiveness promotion supported by biocontrol measures)
  • Leader of WP7 (Coordination and Management, including training)
  • Leader of the identification of molecular signatures and functional determinants involved in temperature sensitivity of the resistance genes to RKN in WP2
